Entry level Etna Rosso from superstar Frank Cornelissen, formerly called ‘Contadino”. Dangerously gulpable. Zero added SO2! 85% Nerello Mascalese plus dashes of 4 or 5 local varieties including some whites, all from old-vine vineyards. Fragrant, structured, full of energy and raw joy. 'Smith Brothers' red cherries & a mineral spine. In my opinion, a cross between a junior Barbaresco and fine domaine Bourgogne Rouge. More pure fruited, less savory, than past vintages. Frank's ode to a traditional expression of Etna by blending several different native varieties. Fermentation on the skins for 2 weeks and NO SO2 added. Contadino expresses Frank’s exact same philosophy in the glass as his more costly, more narrowly defined wines: highly concentrated raw material to express terroir to its fullest extent. I can't think of a dish this wouldn't compliment.
